The year in Peace and Love

As always, cheers to the voters. Respect is due. There were more votes cast this year making the sorting process a bit more tricky. It should also be said you voted for a wide variety of topics in some of the sections, there were few landslide winners this year. Read on to see this year's list of nominees plus the overall winners in each category. Again this year there are a couple of Special Awards aside from the more usual categories. However there are definitely less of these than at the bleedin' Q Awards when it seemed every member of the audience won at least 2 awards. Come on then, have a look and see if your choices made it onto the lists.

This section represents the views of this year's Peace and Love public and not necessarily the views of the editorial team. So please Mr Rose don't come round and beat us up. It was other kid's fault.

1. Best Festival

Roskilde - This year's winner

Glastonbudget

Leeds

Roskilde

The Winner : Roskilde

Predictable? Well no not really, as there was a titanic scrap between Roskilde and Leeds for the title, but the Danish spectacular got home by just one vote. And why not? It was hot, it was fun, the natives were friendly, and everyone had a great time. The tribute band orgy of Glastonbudget was again deservedly popular too. Next year Glasto is back so could this be the only time another festival gets a look in? Anyway congrats to the Danes, this year's big winners.

2. Best Festival Act

Pearl Jam - Top Festival Act

Arctic Monkeys

Muse

Pearl Jam

The winner : Pearl Jam

Again voting was tight in this category but the Seattle Veterans won the day with their emotional performance at Leeds, their first since the Roskilde Tragedy in 2000. Elsewhere, Muse confirmed their rise to festival headliners par excellence and the Arctic Monkeys proved they are not just a flash in the pan, and could well headline themselves in 2007.

3. Best New Band

The Automatic

The Fratellis

Wolfmother

The winner : The Fratellis

Rabble rousing Scots The Fratellis were all over the circuit this summer and fine shows at Godiva and Leeds saw them steal first place. The Automatic came over the hill to get second and Aussie retro trio Wolfmother came in third with big performances at Roskilde and Leeds (and that was just the singers hair).

4. Biggest Musical Surprise

The Fratellis - Best Newbie

The Beautiful South

Kayne West

The Vines

The winners : The Vines and the Beautiful South tied

Yep we couldn't split the wordsmiths from Hull and the grunge heroes from Sydney. Our first ever awards tie. The South played hit after hit at V entertaining everyone, and the Vines put on an excellent show against the odds at Leeds. Rumours persist we may never see them again, if so it was a great way to end. 1am at Roskilde saw Mr West put on a truly OTT show and totally win over a festival crowd more into indie and metal. No mean feat.

Now its on to the first of the Special Awards this year. Certain voters have asked me to give a mention to a service provided, without which they would not be able to attend many of the functions of the summer. These of course are the punters without cars, and the award goes to the extremely hard working Short's Taxis of Manchester. They pick you up on time, take all your gear, absorb mild abuse and banter, are usually free, and you can be sick in the back (well perhaps not the last bit). Never let it be said your efforts are not appreciated by those who appreciate them.

5. Worst Act

Guns'n'Roses - Axl rages against the result

Guns'n'Roses

Slayer

The Streets

The winner : Guns'n'Roses

Slouching onstage still sleazy and still great, GnR run through their hits at breakneck speed and leave the audience wanting a damn site more. Sadly this refers to the Guns'n'Roses tribute act at Glastonbudget and not to the bloated 06 version of the real thing. Its saying something when the tribute act actually gets more votes for best act than the real thing too. Never mind though Axl, the albums out soon isn't it? Slayer divided opinion (they thought they were good, everyone else thought they were shit - only joking). Finally the Streets just pissed about for most of their set at Leeds, and thus lose marks with those who were looking forward to seeing them.

6. Best Non Musical Event

Piking at Leeds

Jo's glam birthday

Dog training exhibition at Godiva

The winner : Piking at Leeds

Freeloader's paradise, Leeds campsite wins comfortably this time out. In fact next year a new category may arise from this, 'Best thing piked at Leeds'. Jo's birthday was hugely enjoyed by all who attended, and dressed up too. Finally, its not everyday you can go to a festival and rock out to The Fratellis followed by watching a German Shepherd being brought immaculately to sit up and beg from some considerable distance away by its devoted owner. All hail (or should that be heel?) Godiva.

7. Best Toilets

Glastonbudget

Leeds inside arena

Roskilde Fence

The winner : The Roskilde Fence

Unlike Glastonbury there are no qualms in Denmark about urinating in a public place, balls to the stream life they say. There are roughly equal numbers of males and females indulging in this activity too. The toilets at Leeds were immaculate inside the arena but refreshingly appalling in the campsite. Despite increased numbers of folk this year at the Glastonbudget loos meaning we actually were forced to share, they still had their admirers too.

8. Best Food

Jo's veggie curry

Roskilde Burgers

Spag Bol at Roskilde

The winner : Spag Bol at Roskilde

As much pasta as you can eat for £3, very messy eating, and free parmesan too. Bargain. Special mention for the Danish burgers which were a billion times better than the crap served up in the UK. Finally Jo's stuff was all up to the usually high standards.

Now its on to our second special award. This year it goes to a Mr Plumpton for managing to sire an offspring behind all of our backs this year. And just in case there are any doubts there is the evidence over in the right hand column. Congratulations sir.

9. Best Drink

Fancy a good old roger next?- Real Ale was big in 2006

Ale at Glastonbudget

Ale at Off the Tracks

Vodka

The winner : Ale at Glastonbudget

Proper stuff was on offer this year at several events. We were all sick of Tuborg at Roskilde so no win here (you could get acceptable Guinness for £5.20 a pint though). Instead its the real ales at Glastonbudget which were plentiful and tasty which won the day. Close behind were the beers at Off the Tracks (a little more pricey and bigger queues). Sandwiched in between was that perennial favourite vodka, enjoyed everywhere, but probably best straight out of a bra at V.

10. Best Fashion Accessory

Ivan's Pot

Peace and Love Wristbands

Uncle Peter's Hobbit Staff

The winner : Peace and Love Wristbands

Steve must take credit for these, we all loved them, as did several Danes and one Dutch lorry driver. Ivan's pot decor came a distant second, and the hobbit staff hewn from the finest Cheshire Ash came up the rear.

11. Maddest moment

Blind man Brown

Ivan's various Stagediving

Leeds Piking

The winner : Blind Man Brown

Warning. Impersonating a blind man in public could actually carry a short prison term. Fortunate then that Tim was in the safe haven of the Roskilde Festival swaying this way and that but usually into the biggest group of campers he could find, white stick waving violently from side to side like you would imagine Patrick Moore would do, if someone scratched his eyes out. It was hilarious for all those lucky enough to see it, but especially for Jo who literally put a dampner on things. Ivan did some quality stage dives at the Camden Crawl during Wolfmother, but diving onto tarmac the day after your plaster cast is taken off is madness itself. The power of Leeds Piking also saw it nominated in this category too.

Looking Ahead

The final section is not really an award but a look ahead to 2007 and the bands we think will do the business on the festival scene. Last year, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Editors and Mystery Jets all stormed through for us. How will we fare this time? So with 1 old and 2 new its this year's movers and shakers. Ladies and gents we give you.

Bloc Party

Klaxons

Leeds Piking (only kidding), its The Pigeon Detectives

Well that's it for another action packed year. Roll on 2007. For other categories such as the albums, singles and other gigs of the year, and indeed to vote yourself, please visit our Forum

See you in 2007!
